Genetics
Is Wedding Cake indica or sativa? Its genetics and family tree
Wedding Cake is an indica-leaning hybrid: phenotype #23 of Seed Junky Genetics’ Triangle Mints line, a cross of Triangle Kush, an indica from Florida, and Animal Mints, a cross of Animal Cookies and SinMint Cookies.1,2,3,4 It was long believed to be Cherry Pie × GSC, an account the breeder rejects but some seed companies still use.1,5,6

The two parents
Triangle Kush, also sold as Triangle OG and OG Triangle, is an indica that Leafly says originated in Florida and takes its name from the state’s three cannabis-producing capitals, Jacksonville, Miami and Tampa.3 SeedFinder adds that it was bred in Miami, allegedly from genetics out of Nevil Schoenmakers’ seed bank.15
Animal Mints is a hybrid of Animal Cookies and SinMint Cookies, and Leafly lists Wedding Cake and Kush Mints among its offspring.4 Leafly’s list of the 100 best strains says Wedding Cake’s strong body and head high are “likely from its Kush and Cookies lineage”.16
Triangle Mints #23: one keeper from a line
Seed Junky created the Triangle Mints line by crossing Triangle Kush with Animal Mints, and its standout #23 phenotype became Wedding Cake and spread widely through cuttings, according to Weedmaps; Leafly’s Triangle Mints page is subtitled “aka Wedding Cake” and lists Wedding Cake among its children.1,2 GrowDiaries’ breeder listing calls Wedding Cake a clone-only phenotype of that line, from a Triangle Kush mother and an Animal Mints male.17
Leafly’s own Wedding Cake page shows both ways of putting it: its family-tree panel lists the parents as Animal Mints and Triangle Mints, while its description says Triangle Kush × Animal Mints.7
Triangle Kush × Animal Mints or Cherry Pie × GSC?
Two lineages circulate under the name. In 2019 Leafly wrote that Wedding Cake was widely believed to be a cross of Cherry Pie and GSC, but chose to follow Seed Junky’s J Beezy, who listed it on Instagram as a phenotype of Triangle Mints; by 2026 Leafly called the old belief an understandable error, since “the GSC genetics are strong with this one”.5,6 Both strains in the older account come from the San Francisco breeder Jigga: Cherry Pie is Granddaddy Purple × F1 Durb, and GSC is OG Kush × F1 Durb.18,19,20
| Lineage | Who says so |
|---|---|
| Triangle Kush × Animal Mints (Triangle Mints #23) | Seed Junky Genetics, as reported by Leafly; Leafly’s strain page and hall of fame; Weedmaps; AllBud; Zamnesia’s seed version; Barney’s Farm’s 2026 guide, which calls Triangle Mints #23 the official cut1,5,6,7,21,22,23 |
| Cherry Pie × GSC | “Widely believed” in 2019, per Leafly; Leafly’s separate Pink Cookies entry; Royal Queen Seeds’ seed version5,24,25 |
| Cherry Pie × GSC × OG Kush | Barney’s Farm’s seed version, which it describes as evolved from Seed Junky’s original26 |
SeedFinder lists all of these readings, including that Wedding Cake is simply a Triangle Mints phenotype; Prime Cuts Nursery, a California clone nursery, says the Cherry Pie × GSC seed lines do not represent the clone-only original.15,27
How indica is it?
Most sources call Wedding Cake an indica-leaning hybrid, but the figure depends on the version. Leafly files it as a hybrid, describes it as an indica-hybrid and rates its effects mostly calming; AllBud lists 60% indica and 40% sativa, as do SeedFinder and Prime Cuts Nursery, and Headset called it an indica-dominant hybrid in 2020.7,15,21,27,28 Seed versions go further: Barney’s Farm and Royal Queen Seeds sell 80% indica versions, and Royal Queen’s autoflower is 75% indica, 20% sativa and 5% ruderalis.25,26,29 Leafly lists the parent line, Triangle Mints, the other way round, as 70% sativa.2
The original cut versus seed versions
The original is a cutting. GrowDiaries’ breeder listing calls Wedding Cake clone-only, SeedFinder says Seed Junky’s version was never sold as feminized seed and is no longer available in seed form, and Weedmaps says later seed projects descend from the cut rather than copying it.1,15,17
Seeds sold as Wedding Cake are other breeders’ crosses and selections. SeedFinder lists 22 versions under the name, from Seed Junky and Jungle Boys to Royal Queen Seeds, Barney’s Farm, Zamnesia and ILGM; Weedmaps says the name now covers backcrosses, filial generations, autoflowers, recreations and breeder-specific hybrids, and advises checking the breeder.1,30 In 2026 Seed Junky released Cake Straws, an update of Wedding Cake built on its Sour Straws line, as regular seeds.31
Triangle Mints #23, Pink Cookies, Cake
Weedmaps lists Pink Cookies, Cake, Triangle Mints and Triangle Mints #23 as other names for Wedding Cake, Leafly says it is known as Pink Cookies in Canada, and Leafly’s 2024 guide says the strain picked up the Pink Cookies and Triangle Mints #23 names as it crossed state and national lines.1,7,32 The Pink Cookies name is not consistent: Leafly also has a separate Pink Cookies entry with GSC × Cherry Pie parents, and Weedmaps calls the name a source of confusion.1,24 GrowDiaries’ breeder listing and Prime Cuts Nursery say the Jungle Boys gave the cut its nickname, for its vanilla cake frosting aroma.17,27
What our lab data adds
The name travels well beyond the cut. Our strict matching excluded 898 results across all product types (652 of them flower) sold under near-miss names, led by "Royal Wedding Cake" (281 results), then "Wedding Cake X GPS" (125) and "Nana's Wedding Cake - NWC" (72); none of them count toward the 3,090 tests on this site.33
